Your RV’s air conditioner unit works hard to keep your motorhome cool and comfortable, especially if you’re traveling during warm or hot weather. So when the AC is showing faulty signs or performing inconsistently, it’s no wonder you’re curious as to what is causing the issue and how it can be fixed.

There are a number of reasons the air conditioner might not be functioning at full capacity or at all and a variety of troubleshooting and repair tactics you can try before calling a repair shop. Many AC issues can appear, but here are 5 of the most common issues to look out for:

  • Not turning on
  • Not producing cold air
  • Leaking
  • Making abnormal noises
  • Running continuously

Unit Will Not Turn On

When your AC unit refuses to turn on, you should start investigating by making sure the remote that controls the unit has new batteries and is responsive. If all is well with the controller, check that your AC unit is actually plugged in and ready to work. There may be something behind the scenes that would prevent your AC from turning on, but in most cases the cause and solution are both very simple.

AC Doesn’t Produce Cold Air

Running your RV’s AC all day, but not feeling any more comfortable than you were outside in the heat is another surefire sign that something is off with your unit. Your AC should be able to easily produce cold air in little to no time at all. If you’ve noticed the unit has been running, but cold air is not coming out, start by first making sure the thermostat is set properly. If the temperature is set to your preference, but still no cool air comes, check the air filter to make sure it isn’t dirty or clogged or defrost the coils in the unit to see if that helps.

Unit Is Leaking

If you notice a leak coming from your AC, take note as to whether the leak occurs consistently or only when it rains. If leaks appear just when moisture is present, then it’s a sign that something external is missing. However, if the leaks are present regardless of a rain shower,

your drain pan could be overflowing. The drain pan is a part of your AC unit that catches drips from the evaporator coil. The water then runs through a drain hole to the outside of your RV. To fix this, simply access and empty the drain pan.

Motor Makes Odd Noises

Any time an AC unit is making an unnatural noise, that’s a sign that something is ‘off’. In most cases, if your AC is running loudly, check that the rubber shock absorbers in the unit are in place. If they’re jolted out of place that can cause the whole unit to shudder, leading to loud noises.

The AC Runs Continuously

For most AC issues in which the unit just won’t stop running, you can first test your thermostat to see if a setting is off. If the thermostat doesn’t respond, you need to consider installing a new one so that your AC doesn’t wear itself out or shorten its lifespan unnecessarily. If the thermostat is not the culprit, you could be looking at a circuit board issue which will require professional repair.
